My blog: Taranto, Linux, Internet, but not only ..
I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my eCAFÉ .. I must say I'm impressed!
I chose the pious recently, the 9:04 "Jaunty Jackalope". Installation is a classic of Ubuntu, which of course only be performed by a specially configured USB stick (I will explain later how to do), it is quite fast (I left most of the default settings, including ext3), and the boot very quickly. The surprise came at first start: the whole netbook hardware was recognized automatically, including webcams! I had to configure anything, the PC was practically ready to work ..
Here's how ..
First download the image of Ubuntu Netbook Remix from this site, then you have to copy it to a USB stick, install first Imagewriter:
sudo apt-get install usb-imagewriter
Then, with the pendrive plugged in, launch Imagewriter from Applications -> Accessories -> Imagewriter and select the downloaded image before and the pendrive as a destination. Please note that this will erase all existing data on the stick!
Then set the BIOS netbook (Delete key is switched to access) anxious that you start from USB, insert the pendrive and reboot, then proceed with normal installation.
Personally, I have decided to enable scaling of the CPU, especially to further limit consumption (because the fan itself is already very quiet), and the procedure is identical to the one I described above (except for temperature sensors probably not present). Moreover, as the final treat, I discovered, after a quick search online, how do I enable sound start and end of the session (which I do not know why are not enabled by default, simply edit the following 2 files:
sudo gedit /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default
sudo gedit /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default
Inserting respectively (always before exit 0) the following lines:
/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login"
/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login"
/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play -- id="desktop-logout"
And here is the final result:
It was a long time I kept an eye on the market for netbooks .. I would say since they made their appearance on the market ..
It 'no use denying their comfort, so long as to be clear that the use must be shown (for myself it is a secondary computer for use outside the home): In general I think I can say that if you look for a notebook for do audio / video editing, CAD, or just to use the latest games, you can also avoid to continue reading ..
The choice is not simple because now the range of possibilities is monstrously large, even if in the end good or bad configurations are always the same (this is due to the fact that in this area to maintain certain characteristics can not be far removed a set of "guidelines").
For me, the features that most interest me are the portability (and hence weight and battery life), and full compatibility with Linux (it's a necessity, I really can not have a laptop with Windows), with an eye price (in my opinion we spend 400 euros for a netbook is not acceptable, since today, with 500 euro buys a mid-range notebook, which is far superior in features). The choice was tremendously difficult, pretty soon discarded Samsung (good and beautiful, but too expensive), like the Asus Eee PC (the most recent splendid, but too expensive, good price but the features are too modest older) I was focused on the Acer, but one afternoon my girlfriend (who I want to thank publicly, I do not know how I would do without her! If there were not really invent bisognebbe!
) Pointed out to me on a shelf 's eCAFÉ Hercules EC-900-H60G IAW netbook with which the French firm best known for video and audio device has been launched in this area.
It 'a Netbook old design, that is very basic, no-frills (but with a design that I find very appealing anyway), with fairly standard features:
Whereas it was on offer at 100 euros less than the selling price (299 euros), is easy to see that in less than no time was at my house (in fact the truth has even got my girl!). Now I'm trying, I must say I'm really satisfied, the screen will not be the best on the market, but is clear and bright, the resolution is completely optimized and is not tiring. The noise is virtually nonexistent (hoping that the fan is working!
), And the heat for the moment is not excessive. As for responsiveness, nothing to say, your operating system is Windows XP, but with a proprietary interface that makes every aspect of Hercules easy to find and launch, and the battery (which I still have not loaded) seems to really last much above average (the house said more than 5 hours of battery life with heavy use). About the battery, has a particular form, which presents a kind of "foot" at the bottom, this is due to the 6 cells, is obviously larger than a standard battery, but I must say that confers a writing position rather comfortable. The packaging includes a user manual (very small), power supply, and a set of 3 stickers to customize the appearance of the Netbook ..
The next step now is to install Linux, as I said I need the operating system of the Penguin, and I think I will direct the Ubuntu Netbook Remix; just do not think there will be problems, in fact there is also a previous version installed directly on Linux, and the hardware is virtually identical (also convinced me to purchase) ..
