My blog: Taranto, Linux, Internet, but not only ..
What is Linux?
Linux is technically a "rib" of the Unix operating system was born in 1969 and became a "paid" in 1984, more precisely, it is the kernel (core) in a freely distributable version. His birth dates back to 1991, thanks to Linus Torvalds, then a student at the University of Helsinki. It was a theme of the year (derived from the Minix operating system "teaching" based on Unix due to prof. Tanenbaum), and apparently not too promising! In reality, what we now call the Linux community and more specifically GNU / Linux, an operating system that is due to adopting the GNU kernel Torvalds.
What this GNU? Simple, when Unix was a proprietary operating system, Richard Stallman decided to kick off a project aimed at drawing from scratch a new Unix-like operating system whose code was, however, freely distributable. From the meeting of the GNU Linux operating system as we know was born ..
Today Linux has more than 20 million users around the world ..
Linux is for everyone?
Yes and no .. In the sense that surely everyone can learn to use Linux, and today there are also distributions (versions) really user-friendly (Ubuntu on all of them), but do need to "reset" the brain, those coming from Windows to erase what he knows and start again Otherwise, the transition is difficult, bordering on frustration. Paradoxically, I believe that a child would be very easy to adapt to Linux than an adult (of course if taken in small doses, increasing the difficulty of the operations performed over time). Once you become familiar, however (and I stress that the undersigned is still learning, I would say that has a lot to learn) the rewards are unparalleled!
Windows Vs Linux
Dai admit .. This is what's most interesting!
Then .. I would say that a unique comparison is not feasible, the two operating systems are profoundly different from the philosophy of those who have achieved. Let's see 'to list a few strengths of both.
LINUX
- Free (almost always, but virtually every distribution has its own free version)
- easy to find (just download its distribution by internet)
- not need any special hardware (works on older computers so dear with the ability to exploit the hardware available, and it is also very compact)
- counts on an impressive community, who works daily to solve problems and improve the entire operating system, being outside of any market logic
- now also allows you to play (which never hurts)
WINDOWS
- is unquestionably the most popular operating system (and this means that each application has a Windows version)
- is user-friendly to the nth power (for this reason some functions more "critical" are totally hidden from the user)
- There are specialized applications that are built exclusively for Windows
- Once installed, it contains everything you need for the full utilization of your PC
- allows you to play using the latest technology hardware / software to the maximum
Everybody throws out their conclusion, I once read that "you use Windows to do something quickly, while using Linux to reason" ..
That may be true, and personally I chose Linux (in fact I could write much more in favor of Linux at the expense of Windows, but this is not my intent), and specifically Ubuntu Linux, but do not pretend to be right and in fact you will not be never read anything written by me epithets like "Winzozz" and the like .. Sometimes I use it almost daily for both operating systems, but who may live together on the same machine, just to have separate partitions ..
