Today on the home page of Focus.it stands a special on the most polluted places in Italy. Just click, and here at the bottom of the page, the list of these 10 places, appears just my beloved hometown, Taranto!

EXTENSION: 11,374 ha, including 6991 and 4383 of seabed terrain.
Contaminants: dioxins and PCBs, heavy metals, hydrocarbons, asbestos.
Contaminated: the steel industry, oil and cement.

The article reported data, those who live in Taranto and is interested in certain subjects, has already felt and suffered, but I think it is good to quote some passages of this article, just to refresh your memory (and why not, maybe to bring aware of the problem who has so far ignored):

"According to the 2008 Report of ARPA Puglia, the only fireplace E312 Sinter plant Ilva escapees are up to 171 grams of dioxin a year. If we look at the European Pollutant Emission Register discover that in 2004, emissions of dioxin industries throughout Spain were 75.6 grams, the United Kingdom 68.6 g, 20.6 g and that of Sweden Austria 1.5. A single line of Italian products in one year does more harm to all the industries of this country! And if we multiply the 171 grams per year emitted in Taranto for the 45 years of the Ilva get 7.7 kg dioxin. That is almost three times the amount spilled in Seveso in 1976! "

1. Predisposition to short-term monitored 24 hours on 24, by ARPA PUGLIA, of polluting emissions: ILVA SpA, ENI SpA, Edison station, ENI POWER, the reinforcement bars.
2. Reduction in application of Community legislation (Council Decision 2004/259/EC) of dioxin emission limit of 0.4 ng TE/m3 -0.4 nanograms per cubic meter (normalized value, expressed in toxic equivalent), through the amendment of Decree No. 152/2006 or through the conclusion of specific agreements of understanding between the State, the Region Apulia, Province of Taranto, the city of Taranto, and operators of industrial installations (Article 5 co. 20 of Legislative Decree 59/2005).
3. Reinforcement of the Cancer Registry of the Province Jonica, in order to have available data on cancer incidence and mortality "scientifically significant."
4. DO NOT RELEASE OF 'Integrated Environmental Authorization (AIA) Ilva SpA until after the mark (the production of data and documents) from the company: 1) the technologies used to prevent or reduce pollutant emissions (particularly benzene, PCDD-PCDF (dioxins), metal powders and IPA), 2) the measures planned to monitor these emissions, 3) the best available techniques used to prevent or reduce such emissions.

Needless to stress the importance of this appeal, it is time we citizens of Taranto started to move if we want this city to come out in practice by the state of profound neglect and instability that has fallen in recent years!
